MOJA ARTS FESTIVAL
The 17th annual MOJA Arts Festival,
in Charleston USA was the latest venue to receive CFC’s radio
drama series Ready or Not. MOJA, a Swahili
word meaning “one” is said to symbolize the spirit and unity
needed to generate understanding and good will among various
cultures. The MOJA festival is Charleston’s celebration
of African American and Caribbean art, literature, music,
dance, theatre and culture.
Because MOJA primarily showcases the
visual arts, CFC adapted the Ready or Not radio
drama series into more of a visual presentation. Talented
23-year-old photographer Toyin Sokefun took some stunning
black and white photographs of Nigerian youth to highlight
Ready or Not issues. Complementing the shots,
which were projected on a large screen on stage, CFC wrote
a drama that was acted by an African American cast based in
Charleston. This extraordinary multimedia production was presented
for 2 days during the festival and was received with great
enthusiasm.
The images for our entry at MOJA are the major
element in CFC’s latest feature The
Future is Ours. This four-minute film, directed
by CFC’s Faruk Lasaki, combines Toyin’s poignant photographic
stills with poetry and a haunting soundtrack.
